Apomixis: ความฝันของนักปรับปรุงพันธุ์พืช Thai Agricultural
Varapong Camarerk.
Concerning the benefits of genetic engineering to small farmers, some people may think about apomixis. This characteristic can be used to produce seeds that are genetically identical to the mother plants. This article discusses about a research progress on apomixis in crops made by several research groups and its impact on seed industries, small farmers and the environment.

Iron fortification in developing of extruded Thai rice snack Thai Agricultural
Chulaluck Charunuch; Saowaluk Rungchang; Chowladda Teangpook; Vayuh Sonted.
To produce an acceptable snack of high nutritional quality for the programs against anemia and malnutrition, the direct expansion snack products were developed from extrusion process using Thai brown rice of two specialty hybridization (variety: 313 and 1000) as basic raw materials. For each variety of brown rice, the optimum operating conditions were investigated with twin-screw extruder at varying screw speed (300 and 350 rpm), type of iron fortificants (ferrous sulphate, ferrous lactate and ferrous fumarate) and level of iron content in snack product (20 and 100% RDI) in the 2×3×2 factorial experiment. Similarly, the optimum operating condition of snack production from each variety of rice had shown that increasing screw speed resulting in extrudate...

In wet season, rainfed area in Lower Northern of Thailand has has an abundance of soil and water availability which is suitable for growing a photoperiod-sensitive rice with high yield potential. However, favorite rice varieties often have low yield and are susceptible to rice pests. Breeding for high yield and resistance to disease and insect pests while maintaining good eating quality is, therefore, the major approaches in changing rice varieties for good qualities, increased yield and adequate consumption. A promising lines, PSL97060-17-CNT-1-2-1, was obtained from three-way cross between KLG88028-22-1-2-2 and F1 of SPR88096-17-3-2-2 and IR60 at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. Selection in F4-F6 was subsequently conducted at Chai Nat Rice Research...

Sulfate fertilizer influencing methane emissions in paddy field and rice (cv. Chainat 1) production Thai Agricultural
Patcharee Saenjan; Natthakittiya Paiboon; Jamnong Tragoolram.
Methane (CH4) is one of the most important greenhouse gases having a significant impact upon global warming. Today, paddy fields are a major source of methane production. The objective of our experiment is to investigate whether sulfate fertilizer can reduce the amount of methane emissions from the paddy field into the atmosphere, while maintain or increase fertility of the paddy soil, and the rice production of Chainat1. The experimental plan was structured using the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), consisting of four treatments: 1) Incorporation of rice stubble without the usage of sulfate fertilizer, 2) Incorporation of rice stubble using sulfate fertilizer, 18 kg SO4/rai, 3) Incorporation of rice stubble using sulfate fertilizer, 32 kg SO4/rai,...

Recently, the outbreak of brown planthopper in irrigated paddy fields in the lower northern region was found frequently due to continuous rice growing resulting in low yield of rice production. RD49 is a non–glutinous rice which is insensitive to photoperiod. This line was obtained from 3–way cross, PSL00508-3-1-1-4 /IR66738-118-1-2//IR68544-29-2-1-3-1-2. The average yield is 733 kg/rai which is 26, 15 and 6% greater than those of Chai Nat 1, Phitsanulok 2 and RD47, respectively whereas the maximum yield potential reaches 939 kg/rai. The plant type shows moderately strong culm with about 95 cm height, 102-107 days to maturity for seed broadcasting and 116 days for transplanting. The line is moderately resistant to brown planthopper and resistant to rice...

High temperatures during reproductive stages causes male sterility and fertilization failures resulting in yield decreasing dramatically. The purpose of this study was selecting rice mutant lines that tolerant to high temperatures during reproductive stages. The simulation tunnel for global warming condition was controlled gradually increasing temperature from the real environment temperature (25-30 degrees Celsius) in the morning to 40 to 45 degrees Celsius at 10 am and remain this condition for 6 hours and then the system in the tunnel was decreased the temperature to equal outside temperature at night time. For the fast screening of Hom nin mutant1,500 lines found that the mutants lines showed both tolerance and non-tolerance for high temperature...

Rhizobacteria were isolated from root and rhizospheric soil of rice collected from rice paddy fields in Nakhon Pathom and Sukhothai provinces. One hundred and sixteen isolates were screened for plant growth promoting properties. Nitrogen fixation property determined based on PCR amplification using primer Salkowski’s reagent and quantified by spectrophotometer at 530 nm. Siderophore production and phosphate solubilization were tested by plating technique in chrome azurol S and Pikovskaya’s medium. Eighty-one percent of isolated rhizobacteria revealed plant growth promoting properties. Sixty percent of rhizobacteria had only one property and 21% of them had more than one of plant growth promoting properties. All of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria which...

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) has been a major pest in irrigated rice growing areas of central and lower northern region since 1975. The monitoring of population density is very important for forecasting the BPH outbreak. Light trap, an effective tool for monitoring the outbreaks of BPH was conducted in hot spot areas. A light trap was set in Khlong Luang Rice Research Center while surveying in farmers’ fields in hot spot areas of BPH outbreak in Bangkok and Nonthaburi province were investigated during January 2011 to November 2012. Aim of this study was to develop an appropriate recommendation for nitrogen management in irrigated areas of the central plain by using Leaf Color Chart (LCC). Eleven photoperiod-insensitive and 3phot operiod-sensitive rice varieties were studied for nitrogen management using LCC. The studies were conducted at Pathum Thani Rice Research Center both in wet and dry seasons during 2006-2007. Factorial in RCB with 4 replications were used which consisted of 2 factors, rice varieties and nitrogen managements. Four methods of nitrogen managements ; recommendation, application of nitrogen at LCC≤2, LCC≤3 and LCC≤4 were used in the experiments. The results showed that leaf color differs among varieties and seasons. For photoperiod-insensitive rice varieties, at...

Straw management by incorporation into the soils is an alternative method to avoid straw burning before land preparation. The experiment was conducted at Pathum Thani Rice Research Center and Suphan Buri Rice Research Center during 2006-2007. It was comprised of 3 trials, i.e., effect of amount of straw incorporated into soils to rice growth and yield, effect of straw management methods to rice growth and yield, and effect of straw incorporation period to rice growth and yield. The results showed that straw incorporation rate of 0-800 kg/rai did not affect early growth stage (number of plants/m2 at 15 days after planting) and yield. Number of plants/m2 at 15 days after planting was decreased by straw incorporation at the rate of 1,200-1,600 kg/rai whereas...
